Marilee A. Litwa is a self-taught acrylic painter who has been working at her craft since 1997. A SUNY Oneonta graduate and former elementary teacher, Marilee has been involved with all types of creative endeavors throughout her life. But it was not until her children were grown that she felt she could devote full time to learning to paint. A shoebox full of used acrylics picked up at a garage sale proved to be the catalyst. Fearing it would change her style, her mentor advised her not to take lessons. It was good advice. Her enthusiasm has not waned, she is not afraid to jump in with both feet and each discovery brings great joy and satisfaction.

Self Portrait - 1998

The Adirondacks have been a great source of inspiration for Marilee. She could not exist without the changing of the seasons and the infinite variations in landscape. Marilee has always been interested in the history of the area as well. She especially enjoys colonial and Victorian architecture. This past year she began working on portraits and animals after many requests.

Marilee likes to call her style "primitive realism." People who are drawn to her work usually tell her that it is refreshing to look at a painting that looks real and tells a story. She feels that she is creating art everyone can relate to, and which evokes feelings of shared memory.

Her work has been shown since 1998 at art shows and exhibitions from Saranac Lake to Albany and Vermont. She has had several one-woman shows and has won many ribbons and Peoples' Choice Awards. Her work hangs in several states and countries. Her new studio is adjacent to her home in Hadley, New York. She offers original acrylic paintings, matted reproductions of the originals and notecards. Commissions for home, camp and historic building portraits are always accepted. Contact her at 518.696.2614 or marilee@marileelitwa.com.
